To honor Peace Officers Memorial Day on Thursday, people across Indiana and the United States are asked to lower their flags to half staff.
Under U.S. Flag Code, the United States flag shall be flown at half-staff from dawn to dusk on Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The day is part of Police Week, which has been celebrated since 1963. This is the year after Congress passed a joint resolution designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week.
