Newark, along with its mayor, City Council and council president, are being sued by the Department of Justice for alleged sanctuary city violations.

The Justice Department's civil lawsuit, which was filed Thursday, claims the governments of Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City and Paterson unlawfully obstructed federal immigration agents and the federal government’s ability to enforce federal immigration laws.

“The United States is currently facing a crisis of illegal immigration, and the federal government is set to put a stop to it,” the complaint read. “While states and local governments are free to stand aside as the United States performs this important work, they cannot stand in the way.
