The most iconic player in the history of the Montreal Canadiens, Maurice Richard, joined the closed circle of Quebec historical figures on Sunday.

The Minister of Culture and Communications, Mathieu Lacombe, made the announcement at a press briefing at the Bell Centre, accompanied by the Minister responsible for Sport, Recreation and Outdoors, Isabelle Charest.

The Cultural Heritage Act gives Minister Lacombe the power to designate a historical figure or event.

According to the government’s definition, a historical figure ‘is a person who really existed, who is now deceased, and who played a role in the history of Quebec or a field of that history’.

The famous number 9 has left his mark on the collective memory of Tricolore fans for generations.
