TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The greatest competitive eater of all time Joey Chestnut broke his own popcorn-eating record on Memorial Day.
Chestnut ate over 36 24-ounce bags of popcorn in just 8 minutes at the Rural King store in Terre Haute. The previous record, which he held, was 32 bags.
The Westfield resident thanked the fans who showed up for the event in the Rural King parking lot. The store is known for its free popcorn giveaways.
“Everybody pushed me so thank you so much,” Chestnut said after breaking his record. “I was going faster than I thought I would.”
Similar to his strategy of eating hot dogs competitively, Chestnut would chug water in between swallowing handfuls of popcorn to help the food go down easier.
Chestnut holds over 55 eating world records and 16 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eatin
