Ever since Donald Trump squeaked out his victory in the 2016 presidential campaign, political analysts have marveled at his strength among white working class voters. This has long been a trouble spot for Democrats. Barack Obama lost these voters by 20 points in 2012. By 2024, Kamala Harris had lost them by 27 points.

But a new analysis from Catalist suggests the real danger for Democrats may be far worse. They’re now bleeding support from nonwhite working-class voters too. Obama won that group by a jaw-dropping 64 points in 2012. But in 2024, Harris carried them by just 32 — slicing the margin in half.
