A $5.8 billion Hyundai steel mill that's planned for Ascension Parish, a project Gov. Jeff Landry calls a major win for Louisiana’s economy, will also require significant taxpayer spending to get underway.
The Landry administration and Ascension Parish officials plan to commit $600 million for land purchases, roads, rail upgrades, and a new state-owned worker training facility. The money also will fund a new wastewater treatment plant and other improvements on the west bank site where Hyundai plans to build, according to legislative proposals and interviews with economic development officials.
The $600 million would upgrade the Riverplex Megapark on the west bank of Ascension Parish for Hyundai and other companies that begin operations on the vast site.
