A tragic incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon in West Vancouver, where a four-year-old boy lost his life and his mother was left in critical condition after being struck by a TransLink bus. The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Keith Road and Bay Street, right in front of the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.

West Vancouver police reported that they received calls about pedestrians pinned under the bus. Upon arrival, emergency responders were engaged in life-saving efforts for three individuals. Despite their attempts, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. A second woman, believed to be a family friend, was also taken to the same hospital and is currently in stable condition.

The driver of the bus, a TransLink employee, is cooperating with investigators and has been interviewed by police. Authorities have seized the bus for a mechanical inspection. Preliminary investigations suggest that speed was not a contributing factor to the accident. Eyewitness photos shared on social media indicate that the bus had jumped the curb at the time of the incident.

B.C. Ambulance Service spokesperson Brian Twaites confirmed that four ambulances were dispatched to the scene, including advanced care paramedics, a supervisor, and an area director. "Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to two patients," Twaites stated. "One patient was transported to hospital in critical condition. The other patient was transported to hospital in stable condition."

In response to the tragedy, the B.C. Ferry & Marine Workers’ Union released an online statement expressing their sorrow. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss near the Horseshoe Bay terminal today. Our members are trained to respond in emergencies, and we are grateful and proud of the assistance they offered. We know this tragedy deeply affected every member at the terminal."

The union also acknowledged the broader transit community, including TransLink workers, who are likely feeling the impact of this event. TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn expressed his condolences, stating, "My thoughts are with the victims, families, and everyone impacted by this devastating event." The community is mourning the loss and grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident.
