NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The busiest bus terminal on the planet is about to get busier.

Construction has begun on the facility's grounds. It will transform the area around Midtown between Eighth and 10th Avenues and 42nd to 37th Streets.

Construction is scheduled to take about a decade and involves at least three phases. The first one is underway, as the process to deck over or build over some access roads by the tunnel to create new space begins.

The Port Authority estimates the project will take about 10 years. Governor Kathy Hochul is watching the timeline and asked planners at a ceremonial groundbreaking on Thursday to try and shave off some time.
