Thunderosa with White Line Nightmares and Hossferatu Lucia Thursday, May 29

Y’know that scene in The Blue Brothers, where they walk into Bob’s Country Bunker, and the band is told, “We got both kinds: country AND western”? Last night at Lucia was like that, but for heavy rock ‘n’ roll.

You had Kansas City’s Hossferatu opening with their stoner doom, with slow, big riffs and guttural vocals from a frontman who paced the area in front of the stage like a caged animal. You had Lawrence’s White Line Nightmares, who middled (but were by no means middling) with their high energy garage punk. Then came the headliners, Austin/Lockhart’s Thunderosa, purveyors of no-frills rock ‘n’ roll, melting faces and kicking asses.

It was the sort of show which felt really weird to be starting while the sun
