The Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start to summer, but the weather for the Yorktown Freedom Run Memorial Day 8K on May 26 was un-summer like, much to the delight of the serious running competitors. The weather, overcast with temps in the low 60s, and with a bit of spitting rain at times, led to a wholesale re-writing of the record book, including a women’s course record by Yorktown’s Bethany Spector, along with nine age group records for a race going back to 2015.
The race was a Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix and Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event, and was the second race in the 3-Club Challenge, which also included April’s Run the DOG Street Challenge 5K (Colonial Road Runners), and will culminate in the Elizabeth River Run 10K on Sept. 21 (Tidewater Striders).
