A Newark man has been sentenced to seven years in state prison for a violent stabbing that took place in East Orange nearly three years ago, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II.
Dwayne Barbour, 34, was convicted on April 4, 2025, of aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection to the May 24, 2022, attack on 31-year-old Daren Brooks.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Barbour ambushed Brooks, chased him down the street with a knife, and stabbed him more than ten times.
The case was tried before the Honorable John I. Gizzo, J.S.C., who also presided over the sentencing. Barbour will be required to serve 85% of his seven-year sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
