ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — The New York State Senate confirmed Amanda Lefton to lead the Department of Environmental Conservation, making her the head of the agency overseeing air and water quality, wildlife protection, and climate programs. Governor Kathy Hochul announced Lefton's confirmation Friday alongside two other cabinet appointments.

"We will continue to take the reins to protect our environment and public health, support equity and inclusivity, invest in our communities, advance sustainable development, and rebuild trust in government," Lefton said in a statement upon being confirmed in the role.

Born in Queens and raised on Long Island, Lefton has a bachelor's degree from UAlbany. She lives in the Capital Region with her wife and stepchildren, according to the governor's office.
