DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - The growing wildfires in Canada have issued an air quality alert for the Northland in effect until monday.
1,200 fires are burning in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario with about 283,000 acres which is roughly the size of the Twin Cities metro area.
A state of emergency has been issued for all of Manitoba with close to 50 fires being fueled by hot conditions, low humidity and heavy winds.
These conditions are now sending evacuees south to cities like Winnipeg. It is the largest evacuation the province has ever seen with nearly 20,000 people currently relocated.
Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has agreed to send in the military to help with suppression efforts.
