Newark Police are investigating a broad daylight shooting that unfolded Friday afternoon in the city’s North Ward, leaving a man wounded.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. in the area of 370 Summer Avenue.

A ShotSpotter alert prompted officers to respond, and upon arrival, they found multiple shell casings and immediately taped off the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a male victim fall to the ground after a gunman opened fire, but he quickly got up and fled before police arrived.

As detectives canvassed the neighborhood for victims and suspects, officials at University Hospital contacted police to report a male had entered the emergency room suffering from gunshot wounds.
