Jim Schlossnagle and Texas baseball's hopes of advancing to the College World Series took a major hit on May 31.
For the second time of the 2025 college baseball season, the Longhorns were beaten by UTSA, with the Roadrunners scoring a 9-7 upset to advance to the championship game of the Austin Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament.
It seemed as though Texas would make easy work of the Roadrunners after a five-run third inning gave the Longhorns a 6-1 lead. But Texas only mustered a single run after that — a Ryan Galvan solo home run in the seventh — whereas UTSA stormed back with seven runs off seven hits in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, but it ultimately proved unnecessary as reliever Braylon Owens was credited with the save. In four innings of work, he allowed one hit, one run and struck out seven of 17 batters faced. Kendall Dove got the win for UTSA, allowing one hit and no runs in an inning of work.
Texas was outhit 12-10 by UTSA and committed two errors to none for the Roadrunners. The Longhorns also left 14 batters on base in the defeat. They will have to play Kansas State in an elimination game on June 1 before getting another shot at the Roadrunners later in the day. If Texas wins both games, it and UTSA will play a win-or-go-home game on June 2.

Final: UTSA 9, Texas 7
That'll do it for Texas, who gets two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth before Galvan walks to put a runner on. Belyeu strikes out looking to end the game on the full count, and now Texas falls to the loser's bracket. They will play Kansas State at 3 p.m. ET before advancing to take on UTSA a second time on June 2.
UTSA adds insurance run
Lytle doubles in the second at-bat of the inning, advancing to third on a groundout by Gruell. In the next at-bat, Taussig gets his fourth hit of the game with an RBI bunt. He's picked off at second, but the Roadrunners do get an insurance run to cross to extend the lead to 9-7. The Longhorns have three outs to score at least two runs.
8th inning: UTSA 8, Texas 7
Texas stands two base runners
What started out as a promising inning for Texas turned into another wasted opportunity. Owens gets Flores to foul out before striking out Gasparino and Williams. Texas has only three outs left to avoid the upset.
Schuessler steals second after review
Kimble Schuessler walks to start the eighth inning and attempts to steal second with Rodrigez up to bat. He initially is called out but, after a challenge from Texas, the call is overturned. The Longhorns have the tying run in scoring position.
1-2-3 inning for Texas
It's three straight strikeouts for Volantis in the top of the eighth. The freshman is doing his part in the comeback attempt. Texas has two more innings to pull ahead of the Roadrunners with Schuessler, Rodrigez and Flores up next in the middle of the batting order.
7th inning: UTSA 8, Texas 7
Ryan Galvan launches solo home run
Galvan launches a two-out solo home run over the left-center field wall to cut into UTSA's lead and make it 8-7. That one had a 104 mph exit velocity and traveled 405 feet. Belyeu gets a called strikeout to end the inning but the Longhorns at least get to within a run.
Texas double play ends inning
Volantis gives up a single to start the inning, but strikes out Morresi before inducing a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. Replay shows Ty Hodge beat the throw at first, but UTSA coach Pat Hallmark doesn't challenge the call, ending the inning.
Texas goes to Dylan Volantis
The Longhorns are going to SEC Freshman of the Year Dylan Volantis, who has 12 wins on the season, including 11 in Texas' 22 SEC wins. He has a 1.99 ERA on the season and will look to keep any more UTSA runs from crossing as Texas attempts to mount a comeback.
6th inning: UTSA 8, Texas 6
Roadrunners get out of jam
Texas gets its first two runners on base before Owens retires the side, including a strikeout looking to end the inning by Williams. UTSA maintains an 8-6 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

Roadrunners score 7 runs in 2 innings

Nathan Hodge gets a single to left center field in the 9-spot in the batting order, scoring Stucky from second. Next batter up, Lytle gets an RBI-single to left field to score Miller and give the Roadrunners their first lead of the game. Gruell then gets another run to cross with a double in the next at-bat, giving UTSA an 8-6 lead in the sixth inning.
Lytle is called out at home after some aggressive base-running, and UTSA's challenge of obstruction fails. But that's still a three-run inning that gives the Roadrunners a two-run advantage over the No. 2 seed Longhorns.
Texas goes to bullpen in top of the sixth
Grubbs' day is done after he's brought on to stymie the scoring in the fifth inning. He retires the first two batters in the sixth inning but puts two runners on to force the change. He finishes the day allowing two hits, hitting a batter and striking out another.
Up next for Texas is Thomas Burns, who has a 3.55 ERA on the season.
5th inning: Texas 6, UTSA 5
Texas loads the bases, but can't score
Texas looked like it might steal a few runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning against UTSA's Kendall Dove. Gasparino and Williams go down in order to start the frame before the Longhorns load the bases with a Borba walk, a Mendoza single and a Galvan hit-by-pitch. But Belyeu strikes out swinging, leaving three Longhorns base runners stranded in the process.
Roadrunners pull to within one run of Texas

Texas makes pitching change
Immediately following Nathan Hodge's two-RBI single, Lytle hits a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Schlossnagle's seen enough, who's making a pitching change to Max Grubbs. He's 6-1 on the season and has been credited with five saves in 54 innings pitched. He has a 2.50 ERA on the season.
Harrison finishes with 72 pitches in 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while hitting two batters. He's responsible for both runners on base.

Harrison's facing an early jam in the top of the fifth inning. McClure reaches on an error by second baseman Adrian Rodriguez, then advances to second on a wild pitch. Harrison then walks Andrew Stucky to put two runners on. Caden Miller then reaches on a hit-by-pitch — Harrison's 21st of the year — to load the bases with no outs.
4th inning: Texas 6, UTSA 1
Texas, UTSA trade scoreless innings
Texas likewise has Belyeu reach on a walk before advancing to second on a steal. The Longhorns can't add to their lead, however.
Texas blanks UTSA in fourth inning

3rd inning: Texas 6, UTSA 1
Texas scores five runs
UTSA's Kelley gets Galvan — who started the inning with a walk — to strike out swinging on a breaking ball, stranding runners on the corners. But the damage is done, with the Longhorns scoring five runs in the bottom of the third to blow this one wide open.
Borba RBI-double, wild pitch extend Texas lead
Borba smashes a slider that stays up in the zone, and keeps it fair down the left field foul line. His second double of the day scores Gasparino from third and extends Texas' lead to 5-1. A wild pitch on the ensuing at-bat from Kelley scores Williams from third and allows Borba to advance to third. The Longhorns have blown this one open.
Longhorns add two more runs
There's a two-RBI single to right field from Williams, scoring Schuessler and Belyeu. Will Gasparino, who was hit on the previous at-bat, advances to third to put runners on the corners.
UTSA making a pitching change
UTSA moves to junior right-hander Connor Kelley. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder has a 3-1 record and 2.41 ERA in 33 2/3 innings pitched this season. Myles ends his day with 2 1/3 innings pitched, allowing six hits and two runs. He's responsible for both runners currently on base, as well.

It's a short inning in the top of the third, with Harrison retiring UTSA's Detlefsen, Hodge and Mason Lytle with a groundout, foul-out and strikeout, respectively. Onto the bottom of the third. The foul-out in particular was notable with how Galvan tracked it down:
2nd inning: Texas 1, UTSA 1
Texas leaves two runners in scoring position
UTSA gets two quick outs to start the inning with Jalin Flores and Will Gasparino popping out and grounding out, respectively. Jonah Williams then singles to center field and advances to third on a double from Borba down the left field line. But Mendoza flies out to center field to end the scoring threat, leaving two Longhorns runners stranded in scoring position.
Roadrunners even it 1-1
Texas quickly gives back a run to UTSA after taking an early lead. After Lorenzo Morresi singles through the right side to start the inning for UTSA, Ty Hodge reaches first on a throwing error by Casey Borba, advancing both runners to scoring position. Norris McClure then hits a sac fly to left field to even the score at 1-1.
Hodge is thrown out at third on the play, however, and comes up clutching his left shoulder. That could be an injury of note for the Roadrunners.
1st inning: Texas 1, UTSA 0
With one out and two runners in scoring position, Kimble Schuessler grounds out to second base, but scores Rylan Galvan from third base to get the Longhorns on the board first. Adrian Rodriguez flies out to center field in the next at-bat, but Schlossnagle's team has an early lead.
UTSA's Drew Detlefsen injured chasing foul ball
Ethan Mendoza and Rylan Galvan both get singles to start the inning for the Longhorns. Texas' third batter up, Max Belyeu, hits a foul ball down the left field line. UTSA left fielder Drew Detlefsen made a charge at it, but ended up sliding into the outfield wall. He remained down on the turf for several moments while getting tended to by trainers.
After a brief moment stretching, he remains out on the field for the Roadrunners.
Texas pick-off ends the inning
Harrison makes quick work of the first two batters he faces, forcing two fly-outs, before he hits the third batter up, James Taussig. A pick-off of the UTSA right fielder at first ends the inning, however, and energizes the crowd in the process.
