CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The ex-wife of a man accused of a cold case murder is in shock after his arrest earlier this week, and she thinks he is guilty.

Michael Schappert is charged with first degree murder in the killing of Ron Novak in Linn County in 1983.

Police arrested Schappert in Oregon, where he’s lived for decades.

Schappert’s ex-wife learned about his arrest earlier in the week, and she’s shocked to hear about what he’s accused of leaving behind in Iowa.

“He was a huge part of my life. He taught me so much. He was like a mentor to me. He was full of wisdom, he was a good man. He was a good dad, he was a good husband, he was a good provider,” said Lisa Flegel, Schappert’s ex-wife.

Flegel says the two first met when she was 14 and he was 31. They married just three years
