A criminal case unsealed Friday in federal court says that Haoxiang Gao, 19, a Chinese student at the University of Michigan who illegally voted in the 2024 presidential election, fled the U.S. in January to avoid felony prosecution in state court.

The feds have now charged Gao in a criminal complaint with flight to avoid prosecution.

The case garnered national attention and fed into the fear and conspiracy theories about large numbers of foreigners voting in the election. There was no evidence beyond a very insignificant number of non-U.S. citizens voted.

Gao had a green card and was not a U.S. citizen. He also had a Florida driver's license and a social security number.
