Trent Sherfield was at a Pro Athletes Outreach conference last February and ran into Matthew Slater. He was thrilled when the former New England special teams ace recognized him.

Sherfield, a wide receiver in his first year with the Broncos, is entering his eighth NFL season and has been gaining acclaim in recent years for his play on special teams. He long has looked up to Slater, who played for the Patriots from 2008-23 and made 10 Pro Bowls as a special teams representative.

“I introduced myself to him and it was pretty cool,’’ Sherfield said of the meeting at the Christian conference. “I’m not tooting my own horn or anything, but he said, ‘I know exactly who you are.’ That to me lit my world that he would know who I was.”
