WASHINGTON — Starting Sunday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority rolled out stricter bans on passengers arrested or cited for violating Metro policy, extending what was once a maximum restriction of 24 hours to an up to one year ban for repeat offenders.

WMATA listed three types of offenses that would result in a ban, these were: "sex or sex-related crimes;" assaults on Metro employees or customers and violating any other Metro passenger conduct rules.

Before Sunday, Metro only had the authority to ban passengers for up to 24 hours for violating conduct rules.

The length of the ban depends now depends on how many offenses a passenger was accused of committing. The banning periods were as follows, according to WMATA:

- First offense: 45 days

- Second offense: 90 days
