A Baldwin Park police officer and another man were killed and a second officer was injured Saturday evening by a suspected gunman with a rifle who also was wounded and taken into custody, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna announced on Sunday.

Samuel Riveros, 35, died after he and the other officer responding to a call in a residential neighborhood were immediately fired on, authorities said.

Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the police force, had been selected for the department’s SWAT team in July 2019 and was appointed as a field training officer last year, the Baldwin Park Police Department said in a news release.
