RICHMOND, Va. — You’re going about your day when your phone buzzes. It’s a text from what looks like the Virginia DMV. The message claims you’ve got an overdue traffic ticket and urges you to pay up or risk losing your license and registration.

Panic sets in. Did I miss a ticket? Was it that camera on Broad Street? There’s a link. Should you click it?

Short answer: NO!

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is sounding the alarm on a new text scam making the rounds. Fraudsters are pretending to be the DMV, claiming you owe money for unpaid fines and demanding immediate payment through a shady link.
