National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers have reported that a single injection of resiniferatoxin (RTX), a plant-derived compound, may offer durable relief from intractable cancer pain while also significantly reducing opioid use. RTX is a potent, non-addictive molecule extracted from the cactus-like Euphorbia resinifera plant, and works by targeting specific nerve fibers responsible for transmitting pain and heat signals. In a first-in-human Phase I clinical trial, published in NEJM Evidence , the data showed a 38% reduction in worst pain intensity and a 57% decrease in opioid consumption in patients with advanced-stage cancer who had exhausted conventional options.
