NEW BRITAIN – Mark Brown did a lot of pacing Monday night.

His East Hartford boys track team was in contention for its first outdoor track state championship since 1990. But the meet was close.

“I was nervous,” he said. “I kept looking at the scores, seeing where we stood.”

Brown had won state titles as a track athlete with Weaver in the early 80s. But he never won as a coach. The last coach who won a boys track championship with East Hartford was Class LL meet director Bill Baron and when the meet was over, Baron handed the championship plaque to the East Hartford athletes as they celebrated their first title in 35 years Monday night.

The Hornets won the Class LL title with 79 points, edging out NFA (66), Hamden (64) and Ridgefield (60).
