BIDDEFORD, Maine — As federal budget talks continue in Washington , advocates in Maine are sounding the alarm about potential funding cuts that could hit vulnerable older adults the hardest.
Programs like Meals on Wheels, which provides nutritious food to seniors who can’t shop or cook for themselves, are already under pressure.
At the J.R. Martin Community Center in Biddeford, volunteers recently packed nearly 1,000 meals in one day.
“We have our meals that come in frozen," Charlene Madore, lead packer for the program, said. "We have butter, milk, bread, and apple sauce."
The Meals on Wheels operation in York and Cumberland counties is run by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging and has served about 1,400 people so far this year.
Current federal funding for the program remains steady
