MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Vikings legend Jim Marshall died on Tuesday after a lengthy hospitalization, according to the team. He was 87.

Marshall defined the Vikings' image as tough, appearing in a then-NFL record 270 straight games, including his tenure as a member of the Purple People Eaters.

Following the news of his death, the Vikings posted a tribute to Marshall on behalf of Mark and Zygi Wilf and the Wilf Family Ownership Group.

The Wilfs called Marshall a "cornerstone of the franchise from the beginning," and said he "led by example, and there was no finer example for others to follow."
