Lincoln, NE — The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents about a new scam involving AI-generated voice messages claiming missed federal jury duty.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the office received over 800 calls from concerned citizens on Friday.

"They had received a voice message that they had missed federal jury duty, and the person was identified as a lieutenant from the Lancaster County Sheriff's office," Houchin said. The fraudulent call directs individuals to contact a phone number and visit a website, with the ultimate goal of extracting money via bitcoin or prepaid cards.

Houchin noted that while scams of this nature occur at least twice a year, this is the first instance of an AI-generated voice being used.
