HOUSTON — An inmate who escaped from a hospital in Austin has been captured in Houston, the Grimes County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday.

On Wednesday, May 29, around 8 p.m., McArthur Deashy Mathis escaped from the Cross Creek Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital in Austin. Mathis reportedly kicked open a back door at the facility and scaled a 6-foot fence to flee the property.

He was taken into custody near I-45 and West Road in Houston on Tuesday, June 3, around 1:30 p.m. by the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders & Fugitive Task Force.

Mathis was transported back to the Grimes County Jail by members of the Grimes County Sheriff's Office Investigation and Patrol Division.
