BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — After 44 years with the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), most people would call it a career. But Bennett Kubischta is still working, this time as a volunteer at the North Dakota State Archives, helping preserve nearly a century of road history.
At the North Dakota State Archives in Bismarck, Kubischta spends four hours every Tuesday sorting, labeling, and organizing photo collections tied to the state’s transportation past.
Kubischta, a retired senior manager from NDDOT, started volunteering at the archives in 2019 while still working full time. After retiring in 2024, he kept showing up. Now, he’s using his decades of DOT experience to help future researchers find and understand the images left behind.
