BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — About 73,000 barrels, or more than three million gallons, of produced water were spilled in Williams County last Monday, requiring lots of cleanup, but not affecting drinking water.

Continental Resources, Inc. notified the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) of the spill, which resulted from a pipeline failure in Williams County on Monday, May 26.

Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas production. NDDEQ says the spill impacted a nearby creak about 16 miles northeast of Williston.

NDDEQ personnel inspected the site and worked with the party responsible to clean up.
