KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Governor Laura Kelly on Tuesday, June 3, declared a state of disaster emergency in Kansas due to flooding from Tuesday's storms.
It was declared due to heavy rainfall, which has impacted portions of the state and has the potential to cause flooding and flash flooding.
This declaration allows resources to be used to provide state assistance.
"Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car," Gov. Kelly said.
"If you are traveling in areas with heavy rainfall, I encourage you to remember one simple phrase if there is water on the roadway: Turn around, don't drown."
Logan Wright with the American Red Cross of Kansas spoke at a Sedgwick County news conference Tuesday evening and said emergency shelters are open.
