WATERLOO — The Spencer High School girls' tennis team saw its doubles tandem of Kennedy Graettinger and Brynn Merchant win a consolation side match at the Class 1A state tournament, but that was the extent of the success for area athletes at state at Brynes Tennis Park in Waterloo over the weekend.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton qualified in Class 1A as a team for the first time in its girls' team history, but lost its first round matchup against Kuemper Catholic, 5-2, as Kuemper Catholic went on to lose to eventual 1A team state champ Cedar Rapids Xavier.

In 1A doubles play, Graettinger and Merchant lost their first round match to Xavier's Tia Halabi and Lulu Rozeboom in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
