In a pre-summer deja vu, smoke from Canadian wildfires is again settling in Pittsburgh, creating hazy conditions.

The haze has not translated directly into poor air quality per se — at least not like in 2023 — but meteorologists say to expect the haze to stick around for another day or so.

“Smoke is in the forecast,” said David Shallenberger, a meteorologist with National Weather Service Pittsburgh. That will likely continue Wednesday, but, “By Thursday, we will get a new weather system that should push the smoke in another direction.”

Why is there smoke over Pittsburgh?

Canada is battling 174 active wildfires, per its National Wildland Fire Situation Report updated as of May 30 — and 77 of those fires are uncontrolled, covering 2.5 million acres.
