According to the Prince George's County Health Department, the rabid animal was spotted by a resident around 2:45 p.m. Sunday near a Target parking lot in the 4600 block of Mitchellville Road.

When two police officers arrived, they found the raccoon with "a liquid substance oozing from its mouth," according to the health department. The animal was also stumbling left and right, rolling on its head, and collapsing backward every few steps.

The raccoon was captured, euthanized and sent to the State Lab for testing on Monday. A day later, officials confirmed the animal had tested positive for rabies.
