The National Weather Service reported an air quality alert at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday in effect until Wednesday at 11 p.m. for Passaic, Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties.

"The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Action Day for the following counties: Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, Union. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday. An Air Quality Action Day means that Ground Level Ozone within the region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards. Sensitive individuals, including the very young, the elderly, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should avoid strenuous activities during the afternoon and early evening hours.
