CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A sinkhole is expected to have a busy west Charlotte road closed for days.

Officials shut down West Morehead Street on Tuesday, June 3 after the soft spot in the road began to open up.

City and state transportation authorities put out cones and yellow tape around the sinkhole on Tuesday, and put up barriers that blocked off West Morehead Street to Suttle Avenue.

The estimated the road could stay shut down until Tuesday, June 10.

A hole at least a couple feet long opened up in the roadway, with more of the pavement sunken down.

It is not clear what exactly caused the sinkhole to open up.

West Morehead Street is commonly used to get to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and the sinkhole is from Bank of America Stadium, where the Savannah Bananas
