A major anthrax outbreak at a holiday hotspot has killed one person and left four others in hospital, prompting a public health alert .

Officials in Thailand said a a 53-year-old man in Mukdahan province, near the border with Laos, died after contracting anthrax, the first death related to the disease in the country since 1994. ‌

Thai health officials said the man sought medical aid for a lesion on his hand that developed almost two weeks after slaughtering a cow. His condition rapidly deteriorated
