This week, once again, raging Canadian wildfires are making New York City hazy. This is not a repeat of 2023 when fires from north of the border sent thick plumes of smoke rolling south, blanketing the city in a thick haze that shrouded the skies and worsened air quality throughout the region for several days. It’s more like the milder version from August and September of last year. (Yes, this is now apparently an annual occurrence.)

The city’s Emergency Management Department announced that the NYC region will be under an air-quality health advisory from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday due to “elevated levels of ground-level ozone.” The air-quality index is expected to reach 105, placing it in the category of “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,” which includes people with asthma, heart
