President Donald Trump joined Sen Elizabeth Warren in calling for the elimination of the debt limit.
The president is pushing congressional Republicans to pass a massive domestic policy bill that would permanently extend his 2017 tax cuts, and the version currently pending in the Senate would add $5 trillion to the debt limit – more than the $4 trillion increase passed by the House – and Warren called for the ceiling to be removed, with some caveats.
"[The president] and I agree: the debt limit should be scrapped to prevent an economic catastrophe," Warren posted last week on social media. "Let's pass a bipartisan bill and get rid of it forever. But jacking up the debt limit by $4 trillion to fund more tax breaks for billionaires is an outrage."
Trump stood behind Warren's statement in the face of some GOP opposition in the Senate, where Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and other deficit hawks are concerned that those tax cuts aren't offset by deep spending cuts.
"I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING," Trump posted on Truth Social. "The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe. It is too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our Country and, indirectly, even the World."
"As to Senator Warren’s second statement on the $4 Trillion Dollars, I like that also, but it would have to be done over a period of time, as short as possible," he further added. "Let’s get together, Republican and Democrat, and DO THIS!"
