COLUMBIA — When Democrat Keishan Scott was declared winner of a special election in a rural Statehouse district by a whopping 41 points over Republican William Oden, the narrative quickly went national.

It had all the elements of a great political story.

To win, Scott — who is just 24 years old — toppled a much more experienced candidate in Oden, a former Sumter County Republican chairman and current South Carolina State University trustee.

With his June 3 victory, Scott will also become one of the youngest state representatives in the nation, and will stand as the youngest person elected to the S.C. House of Representatives since current House Majority Whip Brandon Newton was elected at 22 years of age.
