CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston County Juvenile Detention Center is hoping to turn inmates into inspirations so they not only don’t go to the adult facility, but never come back to jail at all.
Behind the brick walls and barbed wire fence, kids ages 14 to 17 live in a 60-bed facility. Right now, there are 26 inmates, all boys, facing various adult-level charges.
“Murder, to burglary, attempted murder, assault and battery, hit and runs, reckless driving, things of that nature,” Charleston County Juvenile Detention Center Officer Capt. Kieviet Driskell said.
The jail is able to take in kids as young as 12, which staff says doesn’t happen too often, but they’ve had at least four or so since the facility opened in 2021.
