Activists are raising concerns about NIPSCO's seawall repairs in Michigan City, expressing concerns coal ash could be spilled into Lake Michigan.

The Merrillville-based utility is replacing a steel piling wall along Trail Creek, which flows into the Great Lake that's a source of drinking water for 10 million people in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Just Transition Northwest Indiana and Earth Justice are concerned about a potential release of coal ash fill that could harm water quality, fish and other aquatic life. Coal ash is a toxic substance that was produced by the nearby coal-fired Michigan City Generating Station and was used as fill near the piling wall.

NIPSCO spokeswoman Wendy Lussier said no risk of contamination had been identified.
