ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)--- Summer is almost here, and officials are warning parents not to leave their children in cars.
According to the National Safety Council, 37 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle.
"Aside from overheating in a car or if it's too cold outside, those things you always have to worry about are a stranger," said Bill Schrom, Chemung County Sheriff. "You always have to worry about somebody entering your car if you left it running, and then taking the car and the child, you've created a whole different situation," he said.
The temperature inside a car can rise over ten degrees in ten minutes, which is deadly for living things.
