AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine bill allowing doctors who prescribe abortion medications to withhold their names from prescription labels has been signed into law.
LD 538 gives doctors the option to either list their names on prescription labels when prescribing abortion pills like mifepristone, misoprostol, and generic alternatives, or to use the name of the health institution they work for instead.
The bill passed the House and Senate in late May and was signed by Maine Democratic Gov. Janet Mills on May 29. Democratic Rep. Sally Cluchey of Bowdoinham sponsored LD 538.
Before it became law, Cluchey told NEWS CENTER Maine that some doctors were hesitant to prescribe abortion medication due to threats, harassment, and fears of out-of-state lawsuits.
