WASHINGTON — There's a new chief on Capitol Hill.

The Capitol Police Board announced that Interim Chief Michael Sullivan of the Phoenix Police Department will take over as Capitol Police chief, leading a force that has been fending off against increased threats to the Hill in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol.

Scheduled to swear in on June 30, Sullivan led the Phoenix P.D. during a contentious time as the shadow of a three-year Department of Justice investigation loomed over its leadership. In June 2024, the DOJ announced that officers had violated the civil rights of its citizens, including discriminating against Black, Hispanic, and Native American people.
