CROWN POINT — Murder, burglary and domestic battery charges were filed against a 29-year-old man accused in the double homicide of two men last month.

Anthoney Smothers, of Gary, was charged in the murders of Gary Shanklin Jr., 23, of East Chicago, and Montelle Lang, 29, of Chicago. The men were fatally shot May 18 in an apartment in the 500 block of Michigan Street in Hammond.

Smothers was arrested Tuesday, according to online court records. He is being held in the Lake County Jail.

Smothers and two other men arrived at the apartment, appearing intoxicated, to confront Smothers' child's mother about her relationship with Lang. The woman was home with Lang, Shanklin and her three children and told them they could not come inside. They entered the apartment by removing a
