RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — An embrace between mother and son is a moment Stormy Schumann-Ritchie cherished.

The Fuquay-Varina mother said it's a miracle that's helped bring her son, 22-year-old Kai Ritchie, back home as they left WakeMed Wednesday afternoon.

30 days earlier, on May 5, Ritchie was heading to his home in Cary the day before his birthday when a driver traveling the wrong way crashed into his vehicle on Interstate 40 in Raleigh.

"The night getting the phone call was hard, then driving by the accident [inadvertently] was very hard," Schumann-Ritchie said.

According to Schumann-Ritchie, seeing her son in the hospital the first night was the hardest.
