WASHINGTON — A track and field event was cancelled in Northeast DC last month due to a fatal shooting that occurred nearby, but on Wednesday, the event resumed at Coolidge High School.

DC Police say the shooting occurred May 20 in the 800 block of 26th Street Northeast, near Charles Young Elementary School and the former Spingarn High School.

A track meet for 4th and 5th graders was being held at the former high school at the time of the shooting. No students were hurt.

One parent described the scene as chaotic and heard more than 20 shots go off.

Increased security measures were added for the event. It included a checkpoint to screen people at the entrance, and multiple DC police cars stationed around the stadium.
