Texas softball took Game 1 of the 2025 Women’s College World Series championship series and is looking to sweep its in-state foe on June 5.
A pitching duel between NiJaree Canady and Teagan Kavan dominated the majority of the night, but controversy — and a clutch hit by Longhorns catcher Reese Atwood — also took center stage in the Longhorns' 2-1 win on June 4 vs. Texas Tech at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
The Red Raiders will need to bounce back with a victory to force a Game 3 on June 6. However, as the ESPN broadcast noted, 80% of the teams that win Game 1 of the championship series have gone on to win the national championship.
Texas Tech scored its lone run of the game in the fifth inning after a controversial obstruction call against Leighann Goode on a stolen base attempt at second base. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Atwood singled on a 3-0 pitch during an intentional walk by Canady to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead.
