ON THIS DAY IN 1879 , the Eagle said, “A year or so ago Mount Vesuvius was in a state of picturesque activity, and the grandeur of the spectacle drew thousands of tourists to the spot to contemplate it. Now Mount Etna is in a state of eruption, and from the accounts sent by telegraph, sparse and meager as they are, it would appear that the outbreak is sufficiently serious to be included among the historical eruptions. When the complete reports of observations, which are certain to be taken, are collected most interesting additions to the history of the volcano will probably be made.”
