LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Attorneys for former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines are asking a judge to dismiss his indictment in the high-profile murder case of District Judge Kevin Mullins.
According to a report by ABC affiliate WHAS 11 News, Stines’ legal team alleges that prosecutors conducted an “off-the-record” meeting with grand jurors and failed to turn over key records, claims the defense argues may have unfairly influenced the grand jury’s decision.
Stines’ attorneys are requesting a court hearing and are asking for the case to be dismissed with prejudice, which would prevent prosecutors from trying the case again.
Stines previously indicated he intends to pursue an insanity defense. Authorities have not released a possible motive in the case.
